What is Cordyceps Sinensis?
Cordyceps sinensis (also known as Ophiocordyceps sinensis) is one of the most revered medicinal mushrooms in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Featured in both the New Compilation of Materia Medica and the modern Chinese Pharmacopoeia, cordyceps has been traditionally used in TCM to help tonify and replenish the lungs and kidneys, supporting overall wellness.*
In nature, Cordyceps sinensis is a rare fungus that grows on the larvae of the moth Hepialus armoricanus. Over winter, the fungus gradually replaces the caterpillar’s tissue, and in summer, a slender fruiting body emerges from its head — inspiring its Chinese name, Dong Chong Xia Cao (冬虫夏草), meaning “winter worm, summer grass.”
True wild cordyceps is rare, slow-growing, and varies in quality due to its highly specific natural conditions. To ensure a reliable, high-quality supply, scientists have carefully cultivated the Cordyceps sinensis (Cs‑4) mycelium strain. Using a unique fermentation process, this produces an extract that mirrors the nutritional benefits of wild cordyceps, offering a consistent and potent source of this treasured medicinal mushroom.
